The research seminar “Power in relationships of same-sex, bisexual and transgender couples” took place on 5th July, 2017 in iSEE Hub. This seminar presented the results of the research “Power in relationships of LGBT couples” which is a cooperation project between iSEE and COC Netherlands.
There are many definitions of power and many features of power in relationships as well, so what is the right defintion and the exercise of power in relationships of couples? What are the factors affecting the power relation in relationships of same-sex, bisexual and transgender couples (LGBT)?
The research focuses on evaluating the level of the equality of power in relationships of gay men and transgender female couples, the relation between power and safe sexual pratices, and interactions of these couples. The results of the research were presented and discussed among experts and LGBT community in the seminar to provide useful information about how to establish an equal and healthy relationship for LGBT couples.
According to the research’s results, power relation affects experience, emotions and sexual behaviours of individuals in relationships. Besides, power in relationships is closely linked to the publicity of sexuality and discrimination experience related to gender identity and sexuality.
In the seminar, Dr. Nguyen Thu Nam presented the method and results of the research in front of experts and young people in LGBT community. Also, experts and participants discussed to determine follow-up actions based on the research’s results.
